Yesterday's rain caused the fireworks show at Sonterra to be canceled -- so Oscar and I made our third trip north to the safe zone to see if anyone was setting off fireworks.
The safe zone is an area about the size of two football fields, where it's legal to set off whatever fireworks you want, under the watchful eye of safety workers and the SA fire department. We drove through a few pockets of rain. We drove past the Six Flags Fiesta Light of Liberty show. When we arrived, the safe zone was a giant mud pit -- reminiscent of VARF's site a few years back. We found a spot to park that wasn't too squishy and watched the action. Last year families spread out and shot off fireworks on several days leading up to the 4th. This year folks waited for good weather -- which never came -- so everyone wound up on the field last night. (The fireworks stands and safe zones close after the 4th.) In spite of the rain, mud, and insects, hundreds of families were out in the field. It was a fireworks free-for-all as folks were lighting off everything imaginable.
We watched for close to an hour, so I finally got to see some fireworks without having to watch them on the telly.
